Language & Payments
Most first-trip problems are not serious, but they can slow you down if you are not ready for them.
Common Problems
Language Gaps
Symptoms:
- Menus or signs are hard to read
- Staff may speak little English
- You are unsure which button to press or ticket to buy
Fix:
- Use translation apps
- Keep destination names in Chinese characters
- Show screenshots instead of trying to explain everything aloud
Payment Confusion
Symptoms:
- A card does not work where you expected
- You are unsure whether cash is accepted
- A QR code is required for a service
Fix:
- Carry at least two payment options
- Set up mobile payment before the trip if possible
- Keep a small amount of cash as backup
Booking Mix-Ups
Symptoms:
- The train or hotel details do not match your notes
- You are at the wrong station or entrance
- You booked the wrong date or city
Fix:
- Double-check city names and station names
- Save confirmations in more than one place
- Build extra time around key transfers
Prevention
- Download offline copies where possible
- Save emergency contacts
- Keep hotel addresses written in Chinese
- Check details before you leave each stop
